AYA Facts: Did you know...
Each year, nearly 65,000 young adults between age 15 & 39 are diagnosed with cancer, nearly 7 times the rate of young children.
In contrast to children and older adults, survival rates for this unique group have not increased in over three decades. Some factors which contribute to this include lack of insurance, less participation in clinical trials and delayed diagnoses.
These young adults also face a variety of unique long-term effects that will need to be addressed over their lifetime - things like reentry into school or workforce, insurance coverage issues, infertility as a result of treatment, neurocognitive effects or secondary malignancies.
Vital Options International, a national source of information and help for all types of cancer, commemorated their 6th ANNUAL NATIONAL YOUNG ADULT CANCER AWARENESS WEEK in April with special programming for young adults on their XM Satellite Radio Show "The Group Room." Tune in for weekly syndicated cancer talk shows that are also simulcast on the World Wide Web and XM Satellite Radio, and available by podcast. This innovative cancer talk radio program dissolves the barriers of time and distance--allowing people from throughout the world to meet, talk, exchange information, support one another and speak in a unified voice about the cancer experience.
